The Hobbit is a film series that is based on the 1937 novel “The Hobbit” written by J.R.R. Tolkien. The film trilogy consists of three high fantasy adventure movies. They were directed by Peter Jackson. Many characters and material were written specially for the film. The series acts as a prequel trilogy to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. The movies are titled as follows: “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”, “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies“, being the first, second and third installments respectively.  The films take place in Middle-earth, a fictional world with the story beginning sixty years before the Lord of the Rings.

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is a fantasy novel for children written by J.R.R. Tolkien. The novel was originally published in September 1937. It was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and was awarded a prize for best juvenile fiction – New York Herald Tribune. The novel story is written in the form of a quest in episodes. Most of the chapters introduce specific creatures or types of creatures. With each quest, Bilbo Baggins earns a new level of competence and maturity. He accepts all the sides of nature, be it disreputable, romantic, fey, or adventurous, and applies his common sense and wisdom.

Bilbo Baggins (portrayed by Martin Freeman) is convinced by Gandalf the Grey (portrayed by Ian McKellen), a wizard, to accompany the thirteen dwarves. The dwarves are led by Thorin Oakenshield (portrayed by Richard Armitage). They are on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain taken by the dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch). The film series also expands upon many elements of the novel, such as Gandalf’s Dol Guldur investigation, and the pursuit of Azog and Bolg.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is an epic fantasy adventure 2012 film that was directed by Peter Jackson. The first installment begins its story with the approaching 111th birthday of Bilbo Baggins. He begins writing down his adventures which happened 60 years earlier. He does this for his nephew Frodo. The dragon Smaug destroyed the town of Dale, which drove Dwarves out of their home and took their hoard of gold. The grey wizard Gandalf tricks Bilbo into hosting a party for the Dwarves, and aims to recruit him as the company’s “burglar” who will aid them in their quest. After he leaves with them, they travel onward through many adventures and troubles. At the end of the film they see the Lonely Mountain in the distance with the sleeping Smaug who is awoken.

Fun facts about the movie series:

  • All of the gold paint in New Zealand was used up when filming Smaug’s lair. The crew had to order more from Germany.
  • Thranduil rides an elk in the movie. That elk is actually played by a horse named Moose.
  • All of the beards for the dwarves were made of real Yak hair. Nevertheless, Thorin’s beard is all natural, grown by the actor Richard Armitage.
  • Some of the beards and wigs can cost up to $10,000.
  • The world record for the longest fight sequence in a film is held by “The Battle of The Five Armies”, at 45 minutes long.
  • The first roar of Smaug that viewers can hear is a sound-bite of the special effects director’s 7 year old daughter making a roar noise.
  • Before Jackson cast Martin Freeman, Shia Labeouf, Tobey Maguire and Daniel Radcliffe were considered for Bilbo’s role.
